JKIA Operation halted as airport staff down their tools

Written by Vincent Ombati

Since morning there were no operations at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) following the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) workers

It is reported that since last night, passengers were stranded at the largest airport in Kenya since there were no flights departure since Tuesday night.

The airport workers are protesting the move to renegotiate their contracts afresh if Adani Airport Holdings wins its bid to run KJIA for 30 years. They claim these will result in some losing their jobs as they will be hired in line with the Indian owned company.

The go slow by the JKIA workers have promoted cancellation of some flights affecting hundreds of travellers.

According to the KAA statement, the workers have gone against a court order that is in place.

UPDATE: COTU Sec Gen Francis Atwoli calls for the immediate release of aviation union workers arrested while protesting against the controversial takeover of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) by the Adani Group.

Following the industrial action by KAA workers at JKIA, Kisumu International Airport and Moi International Airport in Mombasa staff have also absconded their duties to stand in solidarity with their counterparts.

Adani plans to invest ($1.85 billion in upgrading (JKIA).

This investment aims to significantly boost revenue, projected to rise from $163 million in 2025 to $1.2 billion by 2054.

The proposal includes a new passenger terminal, a second runway, and refurbishing existing facilities, marking the first major overhaul of JKIA in 46 years.
