Journalist Madowo Confronts MP Orero for Flaunting Traffic Rules

Written by Vincent Ombati

On Thursday, Kenyan CNN journalist Larry Madowo blocked a vehicle that was driving on the wrong side of the road in Nairobi.

To everyone’s surprise, the vehicle belonged to none other than Peter Orero, the elected Member of Parliament for Kibra Constituency.

A brief drama unfolded between the two notable Kenyans, captured in a 25-second video clip recorded by Madowo himself. The footage, later shared online, quickly went viral across social media platforms.

“These people were driving on the wrong side, so I decided to block them,” Madowo is heard saying in the video.

After blocking the vehicle, Madowo was met with a barrage of insults from both the driver and the MP, who was seated in the passenger seat. He was even told to report the incident “to whoever he felt comfortable with,” including the highest office in the land.

Interestingly, Madowo initially had no idea who the occupants of the car were until he posted the clip online and netizens helped identify the legislator.

Peter Orero, before joining politics, was a well-known high school teacher.

According to Kenya’s traffic laws, driving on the wrong side of the road is a traffic offence punishable by up to six months in jail or a fine of KSh 10,000.

This isn’t the first time a Kenyan citizen has confronted a high-ranking government official for overlapping or flouting traffic rules during a traffic snarl-up. But this latest incident serves as yet another reminder of the growing frustration among ordinary Kenyans with leaders who believe they are above the law.
