People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua successfully gains entry into Uganda, two days after being deported from Tanzania.
Karua arrived in Kampala on Tuesday to attend a court session in support of Ugandan opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye, whose six-month detention without trial on treason charges is set to expire this week.
Her visit comes just a day after Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu accused her and other Kenyan activists of attempting to destabilize Tanzania.
“In Uganda, for the Kizza Besigye and Obeid Lutale case, our entry was without a hitch in the spirit of the East African Community,” Martha Karua said.
Karua dismissed the claims, insisting that she entered Tanzania legally under East African Community (EAC) protocols before being denied entry and forcibly removed.
Besigye, along with his aide Haji Obeid Lutale and Captain Denis Oola, was last remanded on April 30, with the court setting Wednesday May 21 as the date for mention of the treason case.
The adjournment was granted to allow the High Court to consider an application filed by the defence team, seeking to halt an earlier decision by the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court.
