Former Cabinet Secretary Fred Okeng’o Matiang’i last week returned back to Kenya and unlike the buzz that has been sorrounfing him, he jetted at night silently with not much theatrics that are always witnessed with some notable typical Kenya politician.
Matiang’i who has been abroad for work related issues was received at the airport with close friends, relatives and leaders including Kisii Senator Richard Onyoka and Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni.
Despite the heavy presence of media during at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airtport (JKIA), Matiang’i dodged the urge to speak with the press promising to do so in coming days.
Matiang’i is one of the notable and probably most powerful Cabinet Secretary during the Uhuru Kenyatta government. He was seen as a performer CS who executed his mandate irrespective of the docket he was appointed to.
At the height of Gen Z protests in 2024,his name was synonymous with the youthful protesters who demanded Matiang’i to vie for presidency assuring him enough votes that will guarantee him a straight win against incumbent president William Ruto. His track record, according to Gen Z placed him at a good position to steer the country into a bright future which the current Kenya Kwanza regime is unable to do.
A section of political pundits believe the silent return of Matiang’i into the country is not a cowdise move but a smart one that suits his style of leadership. Too many, Matiang’i is not a politician but a leader whose actions speak louder for him.
Officially, Matiang’i who hails from Nyamira County has not declared his interest to run for the top seat in the country. However, his arrival has already caused commotion among the political arena.
UPA party that is linked with Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo declared that Matiang’i will be their presidential candidate in the 2027 general elections. His former boss Uhuru Kenyatta party via its Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni have already thrown their support behind Matiang’i adding that they won’t fill a presidential candidate in the coming polls.
