Police officer Klinzy Baraza, who is facing murder charges, will remain in custody after the High Court denied his bail application today.
The court ruled that the high level of public interest in the case provided sufficient grounds to decline his request.
Additionally, the court heard that the victim’s family had received numerous harassing calls and messages from unknown individuals.
Given his position as a police officer, the court determined that Baraza could potentially interfere with the investigation or with witnesses.
Despite his assurances that he has a young family to support and would comply with all court directives, the court said granting bail could jeopardize the protection of victims and witnesses, as well as public order and security.
Baraza is accused of shooting mask vendor Boniface Kariuki in Nairobi’s Central Business District on June 17, 2025. Kariuki, who was shot in the head, succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
The trial will resume on February 17, 2026.
