Kabago clarifies shutting down social media in Kenya

Information, Communications and the Digital Economy (MICDE) Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo has called out social media users to be responsible for whatever they post online stating that there is a need to create a safe environment in the usage of social media.

Kabogo sentiments are the connection with the trending debate where some social media users are sharing images or photos or various leaders in casket something that has angered the Kenya Kwanza regime.

The CS said he has nothing against someone having a photoshop of him in a casket since that is not true.

“Someone asked me, when they put you in a coffin and post you on social media, how will you feel? I said I’ll feel nothing because I am not in a coffin. But let us be responsible.“

The former Kiambu Governor clarified the issue of shutting down social media in the country in an effort to contain the issue despite being with the capacity to do so.

“We are not planning to switch off anything. It is not in our mind,” Kabogo said.

Kabogo said they can only switch social media in Kenya in critical times like when the security of the state is concerned.

On Monday 25, January 2025, social media user Benson Malova Ashiko was arraigned at Milimani Court for cybercrime charges after posting a photo on X(Twitter) depicting a fake funeral for President Ruto. Malova will stay behind bars until 30th January to give room for investigations.
