Written by Vincent Ombati

Rwanda voters on Monday lined up in various polling stations to elect their next president.

The incumbent president Paul Kagame who has been in power for more than two decades is seeking to extend his stay in office. Kagame will be competing with two rival candidates, Frank Habineza and Philippe Mpayimana.

Eight candidates had applied to challenge Kagame but only two made it to the final list by the electoral commission. The rest were disqualified due to having criminal conviction among other reasons.

More than nine million voters are expected to cast their votes whose provisional results are expected to be announced by 20th July.

The party leader is expected to win the election by a landslide having won in three previous elections with more than 90 percent margin.

In the 2017 election, the 66-year-old won with almost 99% of the votes.
